A colony of Lesser Flamingos dots a flooded salt marsh in Khadir Island in Gujarat's Great Rann of Kutch. Apart from Lesser Flamingos, Khadir Island also supports large numbers of Greater Flamingos, the state bird of Gujarat. The flamingos of Lake Pulicat Gujarat is the only breeding site of Lesser Flamingos (Phoenicopterus minor) in Asia. The birds come to the flooded Rann of Kutch to breed in winter.
In winter, the birds build mud nests in highly caustic waters. The birds in the picture are Greater Flamingos. Every year tens of thousands of flamingos arrive to breed in the marshes of the Rann of Kutch. The sun descends on Khadir Island, leaving behind a memorable picture.
